Managing Customer Locations (Service Provider)

PAGE CONTENTS

Note

When you add a location for a customer, that location is then visible in the customer UI. Equally, once a location is added in the customer UI, it is then visible in Customer Settings > Locations.

Locations are used to identify all your customer's network locations to WebTitan Cloud. A location is simply an IP address from which WebTitan Cloud will accept and process DNS requests. Once specified, WebTitan Cloud will only accept and process DNS requests that originate from the IP address(es) that have been associated with a particular location(s).

There are a number of options for adding your customer's locations:

  1. Directly: Go to Customer Settings > Locations to add customer's locations one at a time from your WebTitan Cloud UI. See Customer Locations & IP Addresses.

  2. Impersonating a customer: If adding several locations for a customer, you can impersonate that customer and add their locations using the same UI the customer sees. This is helpful as you do not need to re-enter the customer name for each new location.

Impersonating can also help avoid data-entry errors if you are adding multiple locations for multiple customers. See Impersonating a Customer.

  3. APIs: Use our APIs to easily and quickly add locations. See WebTitan Cloud API Access.

  4. Customer-managed: Allow customers to add their own locations. Customers can refer to the WebTitan Cloud Customer Admin Guide for more information.

Adding a Static IP Customer Location

Static IP is the most common location type, where the location has a static (fixed) public IP address. Once you add a static IP, this configures WebTitan Cloud to accept DNS requests only from that IP address.

Follow these steps to add a static IP location for a customer:

  1. Go to Customer Settings > Locations > Static IP. Click Add and the following window displays:

  2. Enter an existing customer name in the Customer: field. The field will auto-populate as you type.

  3. Enter a name for this location in the Name: field, e.g. Customer_Name Main Office. The field will auto-populate as you type. You can add more than one IP for a location.

    Tip

A good naming convention and consistent descriptions for your customer's locations will make viewing history and reporting easier to manage.

  4. Enter an optional description for this location in the Description: field.

  5. Enter the customer IP address. You can enter a single IP, or a range of IP addresses as a CIDR block e.g. 1.1.1.0/24.

  6. By default, the default customer policy is assigned to all new customer locations.

A customer admin can go to Settings > Locations within the Customer Admin interface to change this to a different policy, or a service provider admin can impersonate a customer within the Service Provider interface. See Impersonating a Customer.

  7. Click Save to save this location.

Adding a Dynamic IP Customer Location

Important

For WebTitan Cloud to continue identifying a location as a dynamic IP address changes, you must install WebTitan Dynamic IP Agent. When this agent is downloaded and installed (with the generated location key) on at least one computer in your network, it will automatically update WebTitan Cloud as the IP changes.

Follow these steps to add a dynamic IP location:

  1. Go to Customer Settings > Locations > Dynamic IP. Click Add and the following window displays:

  2. Enter an existing customer name in the Customer: field. The field will auto-populate as you type.

  3. In the IP: field, enter your customer's current IP address.

  4. In the Location Name: field, assign a name for this location, e.g. Customer-name Main Office.

    Note

A good naming convention and consistent descriptions for your customers locations will make viewing history and reporting easier to manage.

  5. By default, the default customer policy is assigned to all new customer locations.

A customer admin can go to Settings > Locations within the Customer Admin interface to change this to a different policy, or a service provider admin can impersonate a customer within the Service Provider interface. See Impersonating a Customer.

  6. Click Save to save this location.

  7. A location key is generated and displayed in the Location Key column. Use this key to configure the Dynamic IP Agent during installation:

  8. See the WebTitan Dynamic IP Agent Install Guide.

Adding a Dynamic DNS Customer Location

Dynamic DNS can be used as an alternative to Dynamic IP to achieve the same result. With dynamic DNS, when the IP address associated with a dynamic DNS hostname changes, WebTitan Cloud will automatically discover this and update the location IP address.

To use dynamic DNS, you must firstly ensure this service is supported on your network. Many routers and other network appliances already have dynamic DNS functionality built in; refer to your appliance's documentation for more information. You will also need to sign up with a dynamic DNS host provider who will issue you with a hostname and provide any software to be installed on your network.

Once you have dynamic DNS in place, follow the steps below to add a Dynamic DNS location:

  1. Go to Customer Settings > Locations > Dynamic DNS. Click Add and the following window displays:

  2. Enter an existing customer name in the Customer: field. The field will auto-populate as you type.

  3. Enter your customer's DNS Name, e.g. www.example.com.

  4. Assign a Location Name for this location, e.g. Main Office.

Adding a Roaming Customer Location

To add a Roaming location, you will need to download and install WebTitan OTG on the user's laptop. This allows the user to be filtered by WebTitan Cloud when they are offsite.

Note

OTG1 has reached EOL (end of life) and is no longer supported. Please refer to the later WebTitan Errigal release for information.

Adding a Virtual Customer Location

Virtual locations use a tag to identify a location rather than an IP address. DNS requests can contain a metadata tag which is compared to known locations. To use the virtual location functionality, your router or endpoint will need to add the metadata in the form of an EDNS record.

To add a virtual location:

  1. Go to Customer Settings > Locations > Virtual. Click Add and the following window displays:

  2. Enter an existing customer name in the Customer: field. The field will auto-populate as you type.

  3. In the Tag: field, assign a tag for this location, e.g. campus_0123.

  4. In the Location Name: field, assign a name to this location, e.g. Engineering Campus.

  5. By default, the default customer policy is assigned to all new customer locations.

A customer admin can go to Settings > Locations within the Customer Admin interface to change this to a different policy, or a service provider admin can impersonate a customer within the Service Provider interface. See Impersonating a Customer.

  6. Click Save.
